Stingy second half defense leads to Vikings victory

Box Score Mankato,  Minn. -  After only holding a three point lead at halftime,  Bethany put the clamps down on defense, and drove to victory Saturday night over St. Scholastica at the Sports and Fitness Center. The Vikings forced the Saints into bad shooting and turnovers to notch their third straight victory with a 74-61 win.

Bethany shot 47.3% from the field in Saturday’s victory, but impressively held the Saints to only 31.4% from the field. In the second half alone, The Vikings held the Saints to 24% shooting, including 0-11 from the 3 point line. The Vikings forced the Saints to commit 16 turnovers. Bethany capitalized on turnovers scoring 19 points off of St. Scholastica turnovers.

Derek Peterson, fresh off scoring his 1,000 point the previous night, had the hot hand offensively for the Vikings. Peterson led the way with 17 points scoring along with six assists and five rebounds. Starters Gavin Kroehler and Deon Wright also joined Peterson in scoring double figures by each scoring 12. Garrett Benson gave the offense a big spark off the bench with 15 points of his own in the game.

With their victory, Bethany improves to 6-9 on the season, with a 4-1 record in UMAC play. They next play Friday at home against Crown College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
