Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. - The Bethany Lutheran College Vikings took on the Northland College Lumberjills Friday in a must-win match for both. With two games remaining in the regular season, the Vikings and Lumberjills were tied for fourth in the UMAC and the conference takes the top four teams into the postseason tournament. The two teams tied in their previous meeting in Mankato.
Northland battled to a second half lead and held on for a 2-1 win over the Vikings eliminating Bethany from UMAC postseason contention.
The first half was very much a defensive battle, with both teams combining for only nine total shots. Northland goalkeeper Jessica Jaeckel saved four shots including three from Bethany forward
Taylor Friehl.
Cassandra Brown put Northland's first shot of the second half into the net in the 52nd minute for a 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Natalie Absil scored a goal of her own for Northland in the 63rd minute, extending the lead to 2-0 over the Vikings. Bethany freshman
Cheyenne Huereque assisted
Taylor Friehl in the 77th minute to cut the lead in half at 2-1. That was the last shot either team was able to get off in the game, and Northland was able to come away with the victory.
The Vikings last game of the regular season will be Saturday in Duluth against St. Scholastica at noon.
