Men's Basketball

Promising start fades away as Vikings drop opener

Box Score NORTHFIELD, Minn. - One big question coming into the 2013-14 Bethany men's basketball season was how are they going to replace its top seven scorers from a season ago. In Friday night's season opener at St. Olaf, it looked like the Vikings would fare just fine as they led for most of the first half against the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe. The Oles caught up with Bethany near the end of the first half and broke away in the second giving the Vikings an 86-64 setback.

The Vikings were hot from behind the arc using the 3-point shot to build a seven-point lead on three separate occasions. A Luke Roddy three followed by a Darin Haugh shot from distance gave BLC a 15-8 lead six minutes in. The Oles fought back to tie it at 20 before Bethany went on a 7-0 run started by a Trent Kuechenmeister 4-point play and a Jacob Wensmann three to put the Vikings up 27-20 with 7:32 left in the first. St. Olaf went on a 26-9 run to close out the half though and led the Vikings 46-36 at the break.

The Oles used that momentum they got near the end of the first half and put it towards extending their lead in the second outscoring the Vikings 40-28 enroute to the 22-point win.

Wensmann led BLC with 16 points and six rebounds. Kuechenmeister, Jeremiah Fogarty, and Roddy also reached double figures with 13, 11, and 10 points respectively. Bethany was 9-for-26 from three (34.6%) and shot 41 percent from the floor overall.

Bethany (0-1) plays in front of the home crowd for the first time Tuesday when they host Gustavus Adolphus at 7 p.m.
