Big second half propels Vikings past Maranatha

Box Score WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Bethany women's basketball team is going into the holiday break on a right note after coming from behind to get a road victory Friday night at Maranatha Baptist 58-55.

The Vikings shot considerably better from the field in the second half compared to the first where they trailed by a score of 27-17 at the break. BLC's shooting picked up to 40 percent from the floor in the game's second 20 minutes and they forced the Crusaders to commit 27 total turnovers.

Bethany's comeback did not start right away in the second half as Maranatha scored the half's first five points to go up 32-17 with 18:38 left.

Over the next five and a half minutes, Jade Pelzl ignited a rally in which the Vikings outscored the Crusaders 18-1 to take a 35-33 lead with 12:54 to go. She started and ended the spurt with jumpers and scored 13 of the team's 18 points. Lacey Ellinghuysen contributed with the other five points.

MBU would regain the lead after a pair of Stacy Reinke baskets gave them a 42-39 lead with 8:40 left, but another Vikings rally followed, this time a 13-0 run giving Bethany a 52-42 lead with 4:29 to go. Five different players scored in the run as Bethany held onto the lead for good.

Pelzl led all scorers with 19 points and dished out five assists. Kasslin Swenson added 15 points with 12 rebounds.

Bethany (2-6) is now until January 3 when they begin a three-game, four-day trip to Chicago area schools with a contest at Alverno.
