Comeback attempts fall short as Bethany loses to Cornell

Box Score Tucson, Ariz. - Three times on Tuesday, Bethany came back to tie their baseball game with Cornell College, but they didn't have a chance at a fourth as Cornell scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to down Bethany 9-8.

Bethany fell behind early, 3-0 after one inning, and fought back to tie the game at four in the top of fifth on a Clint Aretz RBI double scoring Matt McPartland.

Cornell promptly countered with three runs in their half of the fifth to go back up 7-4. The Vikings though came back to tie it for a second time in the sixth with Joe Tuholsky, Adam Geiger, and McPartland all driving in runs in the frame.

The Vikings found themselves trailing again going into the ninth, but were able to tie the game for a third time when pinch hitter Sammy Bolliger drove in pinch runner Brian Vomhof to equal the score at 8.

Cornell loaded the bases in the bottom of ninth. Tyler Woodside struck out Wyatt Kurzejeski for the second out, but would up hitting Beriah Quick with a pitch to bring in the winning run.

Bethany broke out of their hitting slump by collecting 13 hits on the afternoon. Tuholsky went 3-for-5. Aretz and Dylan Gass each picked up a pair of hits.

Bethany (2-6) is off on Wednesday, but returns to the diamond with two games on Thursday.
