Box Score 2 Mount Vernon, Iowa - The Bethany baseball team made the most out of having to move their home series with Northland College to Mount Vernon, Iowa on the campus of Cornell College. They used the pitching of Cory Ferm in game one and hitting of Mitch Sellers in game two to earn a sweep of the Lumberjacks 5-0 and 11-4 in UMAC action.
Ferm, the reigning UMAC Pitcher of the Week, did his best to try to win the honor again next week by pitching a complete game gem by shutting out Northland on five hits while striking out 12.
The Vikings led 1-0 in the seventh before adding some insurance runs for Ferm. Adam Geiger walked to lead off the inning and two batters later, Sellers connected with his first home run of the season giving Bethany a 3-0 lead.
Bethany scored two more in the eighth when Ferm helped his own cause by driving in Lucas Herd and Geiger with a 2-RBI single.
The Vikings continued their hot hitting into the second game as they put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in each of the first four innings.
Ferm, Sellers, and Clint Aretz all had RBI hits as part of a 4-run first. They scored two runs in each of the next three innings putting Bethany up 10-0 after four innings. Included was a 2-run home run from Mitch Kleist in the third inning.
While the Vikings were busy scoring runs, starting pitcher Garrett Benson was busy mowing down Lumberjacks batters. He ptiched five innings of scoreless ball only allowing two hits to pick up the win.
Sellers went 3-for-5 in the nightcap with 4 RBIs. Joe Tuholsky went 3-for-4 and Geiger went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Sunday's game was canceled due to inclement weather.
Bethany remains perfect in UMAC play at 4-0 and heads to 8-10 overall. Keep posted to this website, facebook, and twitter for scheduling updates this week.
