Box Score 2 Mankato, Minn. - With winter being stubborn, the Bethany baseball team had not seen the field in two weeks. Neither their hitting nor their pitching suffered though as they piled up 20 runs while only allowing two in a doubleheader sweep Saturday over Crown at the Bethany baseball field.
A 7-run second inning highlighted an 11-0, seven inning win in the first game. Deric Poldberg singled through the left side to score Mitch Sellers to get the scoring started. A pair of Crown errors allowed two more Viking runs to cross the plate. Adam Geiger and Clint Aretz delivered run-scoring hits and, in-between, Cory Ferm hit a sacrifice fly.
In the fifth inning, Nate Lee hit his first home run of the season with a shot to left.
That was more than enough for starting pitcher Cory Ferm. He struck out five of the first six batters he faced and struck out ten overall in five innings of work while only allowing one hit.
In the second game, Bethany waited for its big inning until the third when they blasted three home runs in the frame. Geiger started it off with a 2-run shot to left scoring Gass. Aretz nailed his first homer to left two batters later and Mitch Kleist hit his second homer of the season two batters after Aretz as part of a 5-run inning.
Dylan Barth delivered a mammoth home run in the eighth inning.
Starting pitching was terrific again as Garrett Benson pitched six innings to get the win striking out six and not allowing a hit or a walk (one runner reached on an error). Crown's first hit didn't come until the ninth inning.
Bethany remains unbeaten in the UMAC at 6-0 and improves their overall mark to 10-10. The Vikings return to the Bethany diamonds on Sunday for a doubleheader with North Central beginning at 1 pm.
