Baseball season ends abruptly

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Duluth, Minn. - The Bethany baseball team went to Duluth on Friday with hopes of winning their first UMAC postseason tournament in eight tries. The Vikings lost a late lead to Northwestern in the first game and then fell to Martin Luther in the next game to put an end to their season.

Against Northwestern, the Eagles scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Vikings countered with two in their half of the inning when Mitch Sellers hit a 2-rbi single up the middle scoring Joe Tuholsky and Lucas Herd.

Bethany went up by three in the fifth. Clint Aretz scored on an error. Mitch Kleist brought home Dylan Gass and Andy Gensch singled up the middle to score Sellers.

The Vikings continued to lead 5-2 after seven innings, but that's when Northwestern began their comeback. The Eagles scored five runs in the eighth and then another run in the ninth to stun Bethany and claimed an 8-5 win.

The loss meant Bethany would next play in an elimination game against Martin Luther who lost to St. Scholastica earlier. Cory Ferm was on the mound four days after he no-hit the Knights.

Ferm pitched well again only allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits through eight innings.

The Viking bats though couldn't get a run to cross the plate until the seventh. Trailing 3-0, Herd singled home Tuholsky.

Bethany pulled to within one in the eighth when Aretz scored off an rbi single from Ferm.

After Alex Klug retired MLC in order in the ninth, Andy Gensch led off the bottom half with a single down the left field line. Tuholsky sacrificed him to second and later went to third on a wild pitch with two outs. A ground out to the pitcher ended the rally and the game.

The shortened Bethany baseball season finishes with a 14-16 record.

Six Vikings hit over .300 with Tuholsky leading the way at .377. Adam Geiger followed up his UMAC Rookie of the Year campaign with a solid second season batting. 352.

Ferm was the ace on the mound only allowing an ERA of 1.30 while easily leading the conference in strikeouts with 85.

A strong contingent will return in 2014 as the Vikings hope to crack that barrier and become UMAC champions.
