Bethany splits with Northwestern; next up UMAC tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Roseville, Minn. - After many cancellations, postponements, and rescheduling, the Bethany baseball team wrapped up the regular season portion of their shortened schedule with a doubleheader at Northwestern on Tuesday. What was up for grabs is whether the Vikings would be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed for the UMAC postseason tournament beginning Friday in Duluth.

The Vikings and Eagles split their games Tuesday meaning the two finished tied for second in the UMAC at 10-4. No tiebreakers would settle who would be the No. 2 seed, so a coin flip determined that Bethany is the higher seed when the two teams play again on Friday at 10 am.

In the first game Tuesday, the score was tied at 4 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Eagles scored eight runs to put the game away en route to a 14-8 win.

Bethany had 13 hits in the game, three of which were off the bat of Adam Geiger and three more from Andy Gensch. Clint Aretz hit two home runs and Deric Poldberg added two hits.

Game two went extra innings before Bethany scored three runs in the 11th to beat Northwestern 10-7.

In the 11th, after two Vikings reached base on errors, Mitch Sellers brought them both home with a double to right center. Dylan Gass then singled to right center that plated Sellers to give Bethany the three-run lead.

Alex Klug came on in the 10th and pitched a perfect 11th to get the win.

Gass, Matt McPartland, Nate Lee, and Brian Vomhof all had a pair of base knocks with Gass driving in three runs.
