Women shutout Finlandia to kick off season

Box Score HANCOCK, Mich. - The BLC Vikings women's soccer team made the long trip to Hancock, Michigan to kick off the 2013 season and came away with a 1-0 victory over Finlandia University.

After last season's 10-0 victory over the Lions in Mankato, many expected a similar result, but a determined Finlandia squad proved up to the challenge and kept the contest in doubt until the final whistle.

"We have to take our hats off to Finlandia," said head coach Derick Lyngholm. "They kept things very tight defensively and really frustrated us throughout."

The game's lone goal came off a corner kick in the 28thminute. Freshman Asia Owens sent a corner kick into traffic in front of the net where it was put home by fellow freshman Cheyenne Huereque. It was hardly the only chance for the Vikings as they out shot the Lions 29 to 0 on the day and registered a total of sixteen corner kicks.

In the victory, senior goalkeeper Alexa Mowery registered her 15th career shutout equaling BLC's school record. She will look to add to this mark as the Vikings return to action on Thursday as they travel to Minneapolis to take on a very strong Augsburg team at 7:30pm.
