Kuechenmeister breaks open tight game with scoring surge

Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- North Central had trimmed a big Bethany lead to five halfway through the second half of Friday's UMAC men's basketball game. Trent Kuechenmeister then lit up scoring ten straight points for the Vikings in a minute and a half to regain the comfortable lead for the Vikings as they cruised on to a 91-77 win over the Rams.

Bethany led by nine at the half and extended that lead to 15 two and a half minutes into the second half at 51-36. North Central would cut that lead to five at 64-59 with 10:38 left. That's when Kuechenmeister went into another gear. He started the spurt with a 3, had a steal and a lay-in, drained another 3, and ended with another steal and lay-in to put Bethany up 74-60 with nine minutes remaining.

Kuechenmeister finished with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting including 3-of-4 from downtown. Jacob Wensmann led four players in double figures with 23 points and collected nine rebounds. Luke Roddy added 15 and dished out eight assists. Chris Scarver scored 13 off the bench.

The Vikings shot a season-best 48 percent from the floor and 55 percent from 3-point range. Their 11 made 3-pointers tied a season-high.

Bethany (2-11, 1-1 UMAC) returns back to the SFC Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest with Northwestern.
