DeBruzzi, Scheffler lead Bethany to first win of season

Box Score FOREST CITY, Iowa - Angela DeBruzzi's late 3 put a capper on Bethany's first win of the season in a tight 56-52 win over Waldorf College Tuesday night in women's basketball non-conference action.

Bethany trailed 8-7 six minutes into the contest before going on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes plus to go up 17-10. Waldorf cut the lead to three at 20-17 with 7:38 left in the half. The Vikings closed the opening 20 minutes on a 16-5 run to lead 36-22 at the break. DeBruzzi scored seven of Bethany's final nine points of the half.

The comfortable halftime lead for Bethany was gone 5:18 into the second half as the Warriors started the half on a 15-0 run to go up 37-36. The rest of the game was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than four points until the final minute.

Angie Scheffler scored Bethany's next six points to regain the lead for Bethany at 42-39. Waldorf went on another seven point scoring spurt to take the lead back at 49-46 with 7:02 remaining. DeBruzzi then connected on a 3 to tie the game at 49.

The Warriors took the lead at 51-50 with 5:01 left. Bethany would score the game's next six points to claim victory. A Lacey Ellinghuysen free throw tied the game at 51. A pair of Scheffler freebies gave BLC a 53-51 with 54 seconds left and DeBruzzi's 3 with 26 seconds left put Bethany up 56-51 to clinch the win.

DeBruzzi and Scheffler each scored 18 points to lead Bethany (1-3). Ellinghuysen added seven points and ten rebounds.

The Vikings next play Monday home to Dordt College at 6 p.m.
