Vikings drop tight contest to UW-La Crosse

Box Score WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - After a nearly two week layoff, the Bethany women's basketball team hit the hardwood at the JustAgame Holiday Shootout in the JustAgame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells. Three Vikings scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Bethany fell 61-56 to Wis.-La Crosse.

It was a comeback effort from the start for the Vikings as the Eagles scored the game's first ten points. Angela DeBruzzi stopped the scoreless drought with a 3 and soon Bethany would begin a run. Trailing 23-11, Bethany closed out the half with an 11-2 run over the final 5:35 to pull within 25-22 at the break.

Almost two and a half minutes into the second half, Bethany took their first lead of the contest. Briana Brandts scored the half's first two points with a jumper and Anna Balcom quickly followed with one of her own to give BLC a 26-25 lead.

The two steps exchanged baskets over the next four and a half minutes. After two Lacey Ellinghuysen free throws gave the Vikings a 31-30 advantage, UW-L went on a 10-0 run to up 40-31 with 10:50 left.

Bethany would not fade away though. Two DeBruzzi free throws pulled the Vikings within two at 48-46 with 5:12 remaining. A minute later, she drained a 3 to keep that gap at 2. That's all the closer the Vikings would get as the Eagles hung on for the five point win.

DeBruzzi led BLC with 18 points. Ellinghuysen scored all 13 of her points from the foul line and Brandts recorded a double-double with ten points and 13 rebounds.

Bethany (1-8) stays in the Dells for a matchup with Wis.-Whitewater Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
