Vikings split season-opening series with Saint Mary's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. - The Bethany baseball team kicked off its season Saturday in sunny Arizona and earned a split against MIAC foe Saint Mary's.

The Vikings had 15 hits in the first game and reigning UMAC Pitcher of the Year, Cory Ferm went five innings striking out seven as Bethany defeated the Cardinals 9-3. Mitch Sellers went 3-for-4 and five others had two hits a piece. Joe Tuholsky drove in three runs while Nate Lee plated two more.

After giving up two first inning runs, Bethany countered with three in the top of the second. Dylan Gass singled leading off. Tyler Hebrink then singled as Gass moved to third. Deric Poldberg brought home Gass with an RBI single. Tuholsky later brought singled scoring both Hebrink and Poldberg as Bethany led 3-2 after two.

Saint Mary's tied it in the fourth, but Bethany scored six times in the fifth to take control. Sellers, Hebrink, Tuholsky, and Lee delivered run-producing hits with Lee knocking in a pair with a triple.

Jake Gleason pitched two scoreless innings to close out the win.

The Vikings dropped the second game 7-2. Blake Kerzich went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Bethany has another doubleheader on slate for Sunday against another MIAC opponent in St. Olaf.
