Big eighth inning dooms Vikings

Box Score MAUSTON, Wis. - The Bethany baseball team scored four runs in the top of the eighth to take a two-run lead, but Northland countered with ten in their half ending the Vikings hopes of a comeback win as Northland finished the three-game sweep with a 17-9 win.

After losing a pair to the Lumberjacks on Thursday, Bethany wanted to score early to send a statement and they did just that. Lucas Herd hit a one-out double in the first and advanced to third on a passed ball. Adam Geiger singled to center to bring home Herd and give Bethany a 1-0 lead.

Bethany scored three more times in the second. The inning started with a Nate Lee triple to right center and latered scored on a wild pitch. With Dustin DeBeau and Joe Tuholsky on, Blake Kerzich also tripled to right center playing DeBeau and Tuholsky to put the Vikings up 4-0.

Northland answered with the first of their big innings that scoring six in the bottom of the second to go up 6-4.

Bethany trailed 7-5 going into the eighth and scored four times to take a 9-7 advantage. After scoring once in the frame, Herd gave Bethany the lead with a 2-RBI single to right plating DeBeau and Tuholsky. Just like in the first, Geiger brought Herd with an RBI single.

The Lumberjacks would erupt for ten runs in eighth to put the game out of reach.

Herd and Lee each had three hits for Bethany (1-14, 0-3 in UMAC) who hosts Northwestern next for the home opener as part of a tripleheader on Monday beginning at 11 a.m.
