Box Score 3 NEW ULM, Minn. - On April 19, following a doubleheader loss to St. Scholastica, the Bethany baseball team sat at 1-8 in UMAC play with little hope of qualifying for their ninth straight conference tournament.
Then something clicked and they got on a roll. What followed was a 3-game sweep at Crown, another 3-game sweep at North Central, and taking 2-of-3 from Minn.-Morris to get back in the hunt for a postseason berth.
This streak put Bethany in a winner-take-all triple header with Martin Luther on Tuesday. Both teams entered play 9-9 in UMAC play. Whichever team won at least twice would take the fourth and final spot in the conference tournament. The Vikings used the momentum they've obtained over the last two weeks to carry them to 7-1 and 15-4 victories in the first two games against the Knights to officially qualify for the tournament.
In the first game, Bethany used a 3-run third to build an early 4-0 lead. The big hit of the frame was a 2-run double off the bat of
Tyler Hebrink. He knocked in four runs in the game.
The Vikings extended the lead to 7-0 in the sixth on a 2-rbi single from
Adam Geiger.
Cory Ferm went the distance (7 innings) to push his record to 5-2. He allowed one run on hits and struck out four.
Bethany scored early and often in game two to put little doubt that they deserved to be in the postseason. They scored six runs in both the first and second innings to give starter
TJ Nowak a big, early cushion. He went six innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three.
Joe Tuholsky went 3-for-4 with a triple and 3-RBIs.
Lucas Herd also was 3-for-4 as five other Vikings got a pair of hits.
The Vikings also took the third game 5-2.
The UMAC Postseason Baseball Tournament begins Thursday. The site of the tournament is now up in the air, but what is certain is that Bethany, the No. 4 seed, will be playing top-seeded St. Scholastica in their first game.
