Box Score Saints' Hot Shooting Downs Vikings
MANKATO, Minn. – After an exciting victory in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opener last night against UW-Superior, the men's basketball team was back in action Saturday afternoon when they played host to the Saints from St. Scholastica. The final score on the afternoon was a CSS victory over the Vikings 103-88.
The Saints played last night on the road against Martin Luther, defeating the Knights by a final of 85-77. Both teams entered play earning victories in the opening night in the UMAC.
The game-play from the opening tip was fast-pace with the Saints applying full-court pressure on the Vikings guards and transitioning to the offensive end very quickly. CSS came out firing, connecting on nine three pointers throughout the first half of play, leading 57-35.
In the first half, Bethany shot 48.3% (14-29) and 22.2% (2-9) from three point range. For an outstanding first half of shooting by the Saints, they shot 61.1% (22-36) from the field and 56.3% (9-16) from three point land.
In the opening minutes of the second period, Holzhueter's Vikings stormed back and cut the Saints lead in half to make the score 57-67 with 15 minutes to play in regulation. The play continued to be physical with Bethany trying to find ways to battle back in the contest and CSS trying to extend their lead to put the Vikings out of reach.
Brandyn Frelix continued this impressive play on the offensive end of the court by scoring 15 first half points giving him a total of 23 points in the entire game. Just behind him,
Walker Froehling scored a career high of 16 points.
Nate Chadderdon led the Vikings with eight rebounds throughout the fast paced game. Multiple players on both teams reached double digit scoring to give the game an interesting perspective from the offensive side.
Neil Eichten and
Nick Sanborn added 12 points apiece while
Zach Brandts scored 10 on the afternoon.
Froehling provided the spark in the second half on both ends of the court from Bethany as he scored all of his points during the second half. The sophomore came off the bench adding valuable minutes for Bethany.
CSS continued their impressive afternoon of shooting the long range which proved to be the difference Saturday in the Sports and Fitness Center. St. Scholastica finished the contest ahead with the final score ending to be 88-103.
The Vikings (1-5, 1-1 in UMAC) will now play Tuesday, December 8th in a non-conference game with Wartburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the women's game prior.
