Box Score Women's Basketball Earns First Conference Victory

MANKATO, Minn. – After falling to the Yellowjackets last night in the first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game of the season, the Bethany women's basketball team returned to play Saturday afternoon against St. Scholastica. The Vikings earned their first UMAC victory of the season by defeating the Saints 74-57.
The Vikings opened the contest on a 9-0 run through the first three minutes of regulation before the Saints got on the scoreboard. After the hot start by the Vikings, both teams played an even match for the duration of the first two periods.
At the half, the women's basketball team led 37-35 over CSS. Bethany shot 41.9% (13-31) from the field while St. Scholastica went to the locker room shooting 46.2% (12-26). Freshman
Haley Sandin scored 15 points in the first 20 minutes of play while adding three steals and three assist for her team.
A see-saw battle continued into the third quarter of play as both teams saw production from the offensive and defensive sides of the court. Entering the fourth quarter of play, the Vikings had a two point advantage over the Saints.
In search of their first conference victory of the 2015-16 campaign, both teams cranked up the energy level in the Sports and Fitness Center during the final quarter of play on Saturday afternoon. In the final minutes of play, Bethany used the home crowd to their advantage to pull away from the Saints en route to a conference victory.
Sandin finished the contest with points 28 points, five assists, and four steals for Bethany while
Dakota Ellinghuysen reached double digits with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Briana Brandts contributed with 11 points and six rebounds in the victory over St. Scholastica. Adding nine points, six steals, and three assists was
Minnie Frederick-Childress.
Bethany shot 42.4% (25-59) from mid-range and 61.5% (8-13) from long range. For the Saints, they shot 38.2% (21-55) from the field and just 20% (5-24) from downtown.
With the win the Vikings improve to 3-4 (1-1 in UMAC) play through the first weekend of conference play.
The women's varsity team will now play a non-conference game on Tuesday, December 8th against Wartburg on the road. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
