Box Score DULUTH, Minn. - The Bethany women's basketball team needed a win Friday night at St. Scholastica to stay in contention for a UMAC Postseason Tournament berth. The Saints proved too tough though as the Vikings fell 73-65.
The loss combined with Martin Luther's win at Northland officially eliminates Bethany from postseason consideration.
Early on, the Vikings were in command. After spotting the Saints the first five points, Bethany countered with seven and took the lead on a
Lacey Ellinghuysen lay-in. Later, tied at 13, an
Angie Scheffler 3-point play gave the Vikings the lead and was the start of a 9-0 run. An
Angela DeBruzzi jumper gave BLC a 22-13 lead with 9:36 left in the first half. St. Scholastica countered with their own 9-0 run to equal the score at 22. DeBruzzi later gave the Vikings a 30-29 lead following a jumper, but the Saints closed out the first half on a 7-2 run to go up 36-32 at the break.
The second half was played evenly with the Saints maintaining a 4-6 point advantage throughout. The Vikings did cut it to 2 at 53-51 following a DeBruzzi jumper with 8:51 left, but would get no closer.
DeBruzzi led Bethany (7-17, 6-7 in UMAC) with 18 points.
Briana Brandts scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Scheffler added 14 points.
The Vikings close out the season Saturday at Northland.
