Vikings lose heartbreaker to Eagles

Box Score MANKATO, Minn. -  A rough first half turned into a thrilling finish as Northwestern came back to stun Bethany 58-57 in UMAC women's basketball Friday night.

Both teams shot poorly in the first half as Northwestern led 22-16 at the break. The Eagles were 10-for-32 (31 percent) from the floor including 2-for-15 from 3-point range. Bethany had an even lower percentage going 4-for-32 (12.5 percent).

The shooting was much better in the second half from both teams. In fact, Bethany had surpassed their first half point total only six minutes into the second half. After scoring only two points in the first half, Angela DeBruzzi came out of the locker room on fire. She accounted for 11 of Bethany's 17 points in the opening six minutes as she drained three 3s and a jumper to pull the Vikings within two at 35-33.

Bethany would take the lead for the first time in the half at 42-41 on an Angie Scheffler jumper with 7:02 remaining. They used a 14-2 run to extend their lead to nine at 52-43 with 4:40 left in the game.

Northwestern countered with a 9-2 run as a Tiffany Stubbs 3 cut Bethany's lead to two at 54-52 with 2:18 left. Chanel Madson tied the game at 55 with a 3 with 1:37 to go. Scheffler countered with a jumper in the lane to retake the lead at 57-55 with 1:23 left setting the stage for a frantic final minute.

Madson was left open for a split second and drained the go-ahead 3 from the left wing with 22 seconds to play. The two teams exchanged turnovers in the final seconds. The ball came to Lacey Ellinghuysen and her 3 at the buzzer was just off.

Bethany shot 56 percent in the second half as DeBruzzi wound up with 18 points. Scheffler finished with 13 points and eight rebounds and Anna Balcom scored 12.

Bethany (5-15, 4-5 in UMAC) has their final home game of the season Saturday against North Central at 3 p.m.
