Vikings bounce back with win in home finale

Box Score MANKATO, Minn. - After a crushing defeat on Friday, the Bethany women's basketball team bounced back nicely in their home finale with a win over North Central 56-46 Saturday afternoon in a UMAC battle.

Bethany shot over 56 percent from the floor in the second half against Northwestern Friday and they picked up where they left off shooting 54 percent in the first half against the Rams. Angela DeBruzzi scored 16 points in the final 20 minutes Friday night and she equaled that mark in the opening 20 minutes Saturday afternoon. She scored nine of Bethany's first 14 points as the Vikings raced out to an early 12-point lead.

North Central cut their deficit to seven at 23-16, but DeBruzzi answered with a 3 to give Bethany back their double-digit advantage at 26-16 with 4:43 left in the half. Anna Balcom closed out the half with a pair of jumpers as Bethany went up 12 at 36-24 at halftime.

Bethany's shooting cooled down in the second half and the Rams used that to get themselves back in the game. A Jamie High layup put North Central within four at 44-40 with 9:53 remaining. Once again, DeBruzzi hit a big 3 to squelch the Rams rally. The Rams didn't back down though and were down by only three moments later after a Lizzy Swanson 3 that made it 48-45 with 8:20 left in the game. That turned out to be the final basket North Central made as Bethany closed out the game scoring eight of the game's final nine points to claim the 10-point victory.

Lacey Ellinghuysen played in her final home game and collected six rebounds and dished out four assists. DeBruzzi finished with 21 points. Balcom and Angie Scheffler each totaled 11 points.

Bethany (6-15, 5-5 in UMAC) next plays Friday at Crown.
