Vikings drop series finale at Morris

Box Score MORRIS, Minn. - Bethany looked to complete the sweep of Minn.-Morris Tuesday in their UMAC opening series, but the Vikings ran into a strong pitching performance from the Cougars and fell 2-1.

It was a nice start for Bethany. Joe Tuholsky led off the tilt with a triple down the right field line and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout from Adam Geiger.

The game was a pitcher's duel between BLC's Cody Leitner and UMM's Michael Dockendorf. Leitner kept the Cougars off the board through six innings while Dockendorf didn't allow another run in his seven innings of work. Leitner retired nine Morris batters in a row from the 2nd-5th innings. The Cougars didn't threaten to score until the seventh. They got their first run on a suicide squeeze and got the go-ahead run on a Jake Schmitz RBI single.

Bethany was able to get the potential tying run in scoring position in the ninth, but weren't able to get him home.

Leitner went the distance pitching eight innings, allowing seven hits while striking out five.

Bethany (6-6, 2-1 in UMAC) has their home opener Thursday against Martin Luther at 3 p.m.
