BLC-Crown split pair of one-run decisions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn. - After a rain out postponed the first game of the series Friday, Bethany and Crown staged a doubleheader Saturday with both games not being decided until the final inning and with both teams coming away with 3-2 wins.

Pitching was the story in the opening game and Bethany's Ronnie Donley was the headline. The senior southpaw struck out the side in the first inning, but he wasn't done there. In the complete game effort, he retired at least one batter every inning via the strikeout on his way to 13 for the game, tying him for second most in program history for a single contest.

It was now up to Bethany to give Donley some run support. The game was scoreless until the fifth when Bethany first cracked the scoreboard. Danny Kneeland hit a one-out single to center and later moved over to third on a stolen base and a balk. With two outs, Lucas Herd lofted a shot that landed in between four Crown fielders to score Kneeland.

Crown took the lead in the sixth on a two-run home run from Daryl Taylor. Bethany tied it in the bottom of the frame thanks to a couple of Crown errors.

It remained 2-2 going into the bottom of the ninth. Kneeland and Joe Tuholsky each walked to lead off the inning. Herd's sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position. After Adam Geiger was intentionally walked to load the bases, Tyler Hebrink drilled the first pitch he saw into left field to score Kneeland for the winning run.

Game two was another close finish. Bethany scored first when Trent Saharek drove in a pair with a first inning single.

Giving the Vikings another great start on the mound was Cody Leitner. He held the Storm to only one run through eight innings and took a 2-1 lead entering the ninth. Crown led off the frame with two singles and after a sacrifice bunt had runners in scoring position with one out. An infield single tied the game. After Leitner was relieved, a wild pitch scored the go-ahead run from third.

The Vikings threatened to even the score in their half of the ninth. Kneeland singled to lead off and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He later advanced to third with two outs, but a ground out to second ended the game.

Bethany (15-15, 10-7 in UMAC) remains home for a non-conference doubleheader Sunday against Hamline starting at 1 p.m.
