Box Score 2 DULUTH, Minn. - Bethany needed two wins Friday to keep their season alive at the UMAC Postseason Baseball Tournament and that's what they achieved scoring 21 runs in two games against Northwestern and Northland to advance to the UMAC Championship Saturday against St. Scholastica.
In their first elimination game of the day, the Vikings faced Northwestern, a team that outscored them 39-8 in three games in St. Paul earlier in the season. Contrary to those contests, it was Bethany who jumped out to an early advantage with a 4-run third inning scoring all of their runs with two outs.Â
Adam Geiger knocked in the first run with an RBI single. Two batters later,Â
Drew Quame's single up the middle brought in two more with the final run scoring off an error.
Northwestern countered with two in their half of the third and both teams put up crooked numbers in the fourth leaving the game tied at 6.
The Vikings outscored the Eagles 7-0 the rest of the way starting with a 3-run fifth. With runners on second and third,Â
Joe Tuholsky's triple to left center plated two and he would later score on a sacrifice bunt from
Lucas Herd.
After scoring one in the sixth, Bethany added three more in the eighth with Herd driving in all three runs on a bases loaded triple down the left field line.
Cody Leitner went the distance on the mound in the 13-6 win.
St. Scholastica followed with an 11-1 over Northland setting up a Vikings-Lumberjacks elimination game Friday night.
Bethany trailed Northland 3-1 after four innings before a 3-run fifth gave the Vikings the lead. Geiger knocked in the frame's first run with a single up the middle that scored Herd.Â
Nick Caldeen's double down the left field line scored Geiger from first to tie it then Quame followed with a single to plate Caldeen to give BLC a 4-3 advantage.
Later tied at 4, Bethany scored one in the seventh to retake the lead on aÂ
Josh Montbriand RBI single. The Vikings added three more in the eighth to take an 8-4 advantage while capitalizing on Northland miscues.
Like Leitner in the opener,Â
Brandyn Olsen pitched a complete game striking out eight in the 8-5 win.
Bethany will need to beat St. Scholastica twice on Saturday to claim the UMAC crown and the school's first NCAA Tournament bid. The first game starts at noon with the second game to follow approximately 30 minutes after, if necessary.
