Box Score 2 Volleyball Team Drops Two At UMM Tournament
MORRIS, Minn. – The Vikings Volleyball Team was back in action as they traveled to Morris for a weekend of solid competition. The tournament kicked off with a match against the Storm of Simpson College, where the Vikings wouldn't go down without a fight. The first set started out close, both teams capitalizing on the others' errors, until a pair of back-to-back kills gave Simpson a mid-set lead, which they would hang on to until the end where they would clinch a 25-18 win.
The Vikings fought hard in set two, but couldn't stop the momentum that the Storm had. Bethany fell 17-25 in set two, but quickly turned the momentum to their side of the net, coming away with a close 27-25 win in the third set. One last time, the Storm gained back the momentum to go on to defeat the Vikings in set four with a 25-10 victory.
Kristen Mielke (New Germany, Minn./Mayer Lutheran) was the hot hand for the Vikings with a team high of 16 kills, with teammates
Alex Hansen (Austin, Minn./Austin) and
Sarah Haynes (Madelia, Minn./Madelia) adding 7 kills apiece.
Alexandra Grejlak (New Ulm, Minn./New Ulm) lead the team in assists with 26, while also adding a service ace. Defensively,
Anna Nelson (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) and
Jessica Grimsley (Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran) lead the team in digs with 15 and 13, respectively.
The Vikings then faced Hamline University for the tail end of their double header for the day. Bethany fell in three sets to the Pipers 12-25, 19-25, and 23-25.
Kristen Mielke and
Sarah Haynes lead the team in kills, each adding 7, while teammate
Alex Hansen wasn't far behind with 6.
Anna Nelson had 12 digs for the Vikings, while teammate
Jessica Grimsley also added 7.
Alexandra Grejlak chalked up a career-high of 28 assists.
The Vikings will close out the tournament with a double header against St. Catherine and Minnesota Morris, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday September 5.
