Women's Basketball Wins in Exciting Fashion

MANKATO, Minn. – Currently in fifth place in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, the women's basketball team had an important home contest Friday night against Minnesota Morris. The Vikings held on to a late lead to earn a victory over the Cougars, 57-53.
 
Bethany improves to a 7-8 record and a 4-3 record in the UMAC.
 
The Vikings created 16 turnovers in the first two quarters of play to lead the Cougars 28-22 at the break. Recently recognized by HERO Sports as being one of the top D3 women's basketball players in steals, Minnie Frederick-Childress led the Vikings with 10 first half points to go along with two steals. Briana Brandts neared a first half double-double, scoring eight points and collecting six rebounds.
 
The Vikings extended their lead over the Cougars in the third quarter, leading 47-33 entering the final 10 minutes of play. In the fourth, Bethany took control in the opening minutes by extending their already established lead to as many as 18 with 8:38 remaining.
 
In the final eight minutes, the Cougars clawed their way back into the ballgame with pressure defensive and ball movement on the offensive end. Minn.-Morris came within two points of the Vikings with 20 seconds left in the game. Haley Sandin drained two clutch free-throws down the stretch to secure the Vikings victory over the Cougars.
 
Minnie Frederick-Childress finished the game with 21 points, four rebounds, four assists, and four steals for the Vikings. Senior Briana Brandts added another double-double to her already impressive season, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Dakota Ellinghuysen scored 12 points and added seven rebounds to her stat line. In 38 minutes of action, Haley Sandin finished with eight points, four assists, and four steals.
 
Next up for the Vikings will be Crown College on Saturday. The women's team will play at 5 p.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center. Dance Express will provide the half-time entertainment for both the men's and women's game. Come out and support the Vikings basketball teams.
