MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team opened its 2016-17 season at home on Tuesday night against St. Olaf. In a back and forth contest, it was the Oles coming out with the season opening win over the Vikings, 67-61.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Bethany outscored St. Olaf 21-12 in the second quarter to take a 34-26 lead into halftime.
- The Vikings shot 50% from the field through the first 20 minutes compared to the Oles 35%.
- The game was tied at 50-50 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
- St. Olaf outscored Bethany 41-27 in the final two quarters, which proved to be the difference.
- STO opened up the season by shooting 40% (22-55) from the field, connecting on 33.3% (9-27) from long range.
- BLC finished game one shooting 35.7% (20-56) from inside the arc, while making 38.9% (7-18) from three's.
- Bethany scored 25 points off St. Olaf turnovers.
HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE VIKINGS:
- Sophomore Haley Sandin (Zimmerman, Minn.) led all Vikings with 22 points in 38 minutes of action.
- Junior Brooke Henning (Worthington, Minn.) added nine points to the offensive attack.
- Senior Christina Wickingson (Mason, Wis.) contributed with eight points and five steals.
- Junior Dakota Ellinghuysen (Peterson, Minn.) finished the contest with six points and eight rebounds.
UP NEXT:
The women's basketball team will now hit the road to Pella, Iowa to take on the Central Dutch in a non-conference contest on Friday, November 18
th. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Kuyper Gymnasium.
