Box Score Women's Basketball Edged out Northland with 53-40 Victory
MANKATO, Minn. – Coming off a victory over Martin Luther last Saturday, the Bethany women's basketball team returned to their home court on Friday night to take on the Lumberjills from Northland. The Vikings kept their winning ways alive by defeating the Lumberjills 53-40.
With the win, Bethany improves to 11-9 overall and 8-4 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
Although both teams shot under 35% from the field in the first half, the Vikings were able hold the Lumberjills to just 17 points, allowing Bethany to overcome 13 first half turnovers in route to a 20-17 advantage at the half.
The Vikings came out in the second half of basketball with much more energy which helped them both offensively and defensively. Bethany built a 13 point lead entering the final 10 minutes of action. In the fourth
, Minnie Frederick-Childress helped extend the lead to 17 points at the 05:59 mark by knocking down a three-pointer.
Northland showed no signs of giving in as they continued to apply full court pressure on the Vikings guards. Bethany found ways to break the pressure and execute plays on the offensive end to keep the Lumberjills out of reach in the contest.
Bethany remains at the number three spot in the standings following the victory over Northland.
Looking at the numbers: Senior
Briana Brandts continued her impressive senior campaign by finishing with yet another double-double in the contest. She finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and three steals while playing all 40 minutes for the Vikings. Junior
Minnie Frederick-Childress finished the UMAC battle with 13 points, seven steals, and four assists while sophomore
Dakota Ellinghuysen added eight points, four rebounds, and three block shots.
Christina Wickingson contributed with seven points in 40 minutes.
Bethany forced 29 turnovers on the night which resulted in 21 points on the offensive end. The biggest lead for the women's basketball team was 17.
Up Next: The Vikings will play a non-conference game against the Lions from Finlandia on Saturday afternoon. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. with the men's game happening beforehand.
