Vikings Narrowly Lose to Cougars

MANKATO, Minn. – To close out the weekend home stand, the Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team played host to the University of Minnesota-Morris in a huge Upper Midwest Athletic Conference contest.
 
THE BASICS:
Final Score: Minnesota-Morris 78, Bethany Lutheran 68
Records: Bethany Lutheran (9-10, 7-4 UMAC), Minnesota-Morris (15-5, 10-1)
Location: North Gym | Sports and Fitness Center
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams began the UMAC contest with strong offensive possessions to combine for 43 first quarter points.
  • Bethany Lutheran shot 45.7 percent (16-for-35) in the first half while the Cougars shot slightly lower at 43.5 percent (10-23).
  • The Vikings outscored Minnesota-Morris 24-10 in the second quarter to take a 44-33 lead into halftime.
  • UMM had 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of regulation compared to BLC's four.
  • In the third, UMM scored the first 12 points to erase the halftime deficit.
  • The Cougars outscored the Vikings 20-11 in the third quarter of play to come within two points (55-33) entering the final period of play.
  • It was all Cougars in the fourth, scoring 25 points to the Vikings 13 to come away with the conference win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Haley Sandin (Zimmerman, Minn.) and Minnie Frederick-Childress (Flint, Mich.) scored 17 and 16 points apiece in the first half of action.
  • Sandin finished with 25 points while Frederick-Childress was close behind with 23.
  • Sandin scored 11 points from the FT line.
  • Senior Christina Wickingson (Mason, Wis.) led the team with five total rebounds
  • The Vikings ended the game shooting 36.2 percent (25-for-69), while the Cougars rang in at 51.1 percent (23-for-45) from the field.
 
UP NEXT:
The Vikings (9-10, 7-4) will now be on the road of their next four conference games. On Friday, February 3rd the Vikings will play St. Scholastica at 5:30 p.m. in Duluth, Minnesota.
