MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran Viking's volleyball team took the court one more time on Saturday night for Senior Night. In a game that showed a lot of heart by the Vikings (10-20, 6-10), the 14th ranked University of Northwestern Eagles (28-6, 15-0) were too much, winning 3-0 (22-25, 11-25, 9-25).
Three seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony for the Vikings – Anna Nelson, Jessica Grimsley, and Rachel Sorensen.
The Vikings came out matching the Eagles point for point in the first set, as it was tied numerous times. Ultimately, the Eagles outlasted the Vikings, but the Vikings had given them a scare once again.
Northwestern used the momentum of their first set to take the next two sets.
Northwestern was highlighted by powerful hits all night from senior Lindsey Peterson with 18 kills. They had 47 kills as a team. The Vikings were led in kills by sophomore Megan Rutt with 9, while senior Anna Nelson led the team with 11 digs in her final match.
The Vikings showed heart all season long and their seniors showed that in their play every game. Though this is the end of the road for the 2017 season, this was a team that always showed joy and never gave in.
