MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany men's basketball team (0-2) hosted the Concordia Cobbers (2-0) in a Saturday afternoon game. Both teams had sizeable leads at different points in the ballgame, but it was the Cobbers who escaped in the end with a one point win after a last-second attempt for the Vikings bounced off the rim.
The Vikings were in control early, swarming the Cobbers with defensive activity. The Vikings caused seven first-half turnovers, forcing the Cobbers to call a timeout with just over ten minutes remaining. The Vikings continued to push and watched their lead swell to 10 points around the eight minute mark. The Cobbers responded, however, and chipped away at the Viking lead, eventually retaking control with two minutes remaining in the first half. The Cobbers were 7-11 (63.6%) from three-point range in the first half and held a 45-38 lead at the break.
The lead continued to grow for the Cobbers in the second half as they led 78-61 with eight minutes remaining. As the Vikings have shown already this season, they continued to fight and began to turn the momentum in their favor. Down by one point, needing to go the full-length of the court with 3.9 seconds remaining, Bradley Rose took the inbounds pass and put up a 13 foot shot that bounced off the rim and out. The Cobbers escaped with an 88-87 win.
All five Bethany Lutheran starters reached double-figure scoring. The Vikings got 15 points each from Bradley Rose and Neil Eichten. Freshman guard Jared Milinkovich had ten points off the bench. The Vikings were 19-22 as a team from the free throw line.
The Cobbers shot 15-22 from three-point range (68.2%) in the game and 33-57 (57.9%) overall. They had 24 assists on 33 made shots.
Up Next: The Vikings remain at home playing a non-conference game against Luther College on Tuesday, November 21 at 7 PM.
