Vikings fall to Macalester in non-conference play

Box Score MANKATO, Minn.  – In their first game back from Christmas break, the Bethany women's basketball team (8-3) fell to non-conference opponent Macalester (3-6) by a score of 78-75.
 
It was a bit of a slow start in the first half for both teams. The Vikings shot 9-35 (25.7%) from the field while Macalester shot 9-25 (36%) and had 13 turnovers. Abby Olson carried the Vikings in the first half with eight points on 3-6 shooting from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line. Macalester held a 27-26 lead at halftime.
 
The action picked up in the second half as the two teams combined for 100 points. Macalester began to pull away late, but the Vikings put on the press and climbed back into the game. Down by three points with seven seconds to go, Haley Sandin let a deep three-pointer fly and saw it rattle in and out. Macalester escaped with a 78-75 win.
 
Abby Olson led the Vikings with 16 points. She also had six steals. Hanna Geistfeld gave the Vikings 15 points and seven rebounds. As a team, the Vikings were 24-73 (32.9%) from the field and 5-23 (21.7%) from behind the arc. The Vikings shot well from the free throw line, going 22-26 (84.6%).
