Vikings stay ahead of the Cougars

Box Score MANKATO, Minn.  – The Bethany Vikings (9-3, 4-1) hosted the MN-Morris Cougars (2-10, 2-2) in UMAC action on Wednesday night. The Vikings entered the contest in third place overall in the conference standings while the Cougars entered in fourth place. The Vikings emerged victorious, winning by a final score of 92-83.
 
The action started right away in this game as Morris jumped out to a 24-19 lead after the first quarter. Bethany stayed close and went on a nice run towards the end of the second quarter, taking a three point lead with just over a minute to go. The Cougars finished the half with a four-point run and went into the break ahead of the Vikings 44-43.
 
Brooke Henning led all scorers in the first half with 15 points, cashing in on three shots from behind the arc. Haley Sandin added 14 points of her own in the first 20 minutes on 5-9 shooting from the field. As a team, the Vikings shot 40.9% from the field in the first half and had 11 assists on 18 made shots with only three turnovers.
 
The Vikings turned the momentum in their favor during the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 23-15. Three consecutive makes from deep, two from Sandin and one from Olson, helped the Vikings stretch their lead to seven points heading into the fourth quarter. Bethany remained in control down the stretch during another high-scoring quarter to finish the game with a 92-83 win.
 
Haley Sandin, Brooke Henning, and Abby Olson combined for 74 of the Vikings 92 total points. Sandin led the way with 32 points on 10-17 shooting and added six assists. Henning finished the game with a double-double which included 27 points and 10 rebounds. Olson added 15 points and six assists.  
 
Up Next: The Vikings travel to first place University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday, January 6th. Tipoff is 5 PM.
