Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Bethany Vikings (9-4, 4-2) lost on the road to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets (10-4, 6-0) on Saturday evening.
The Yellowjackets sit at the top of the UMAC with an undefeated record and they showed why from the outset of the game. Superior raced out to a 27-8 lead after the first quarter of play. The Vikings increased their offensive output in the second quarter, scoring 17 points, but they weren't able to slow the Yellowjacket attack. At the half, the Vikings trailed 50-25.
Abby Olson scored 10 first-half points for the Vikings on 4-7 shooting from the field. Hanna Geistfeld gave the Vikings seven points and Dakota Ellinghuysen scored six points. As a team, the Vikings were 10-31 (32.3%) from the field in the first half and 0-6 from behind the arc.
Bethany played well after half, winning the third quarter 27-24. Bethany again outscored the Yellowjackets in the fourth quarter, but they weren't able to overcome the first-half deficit, losing by a final score of 90-72.
As a team, the Vikings finished 29-67 (43.3%) from the field, but struggled from behind the arc going 2-15 (13.3%). The Vikings defense forced Superior into 21 turnovers.
Abby Olson finished the game with 14 points on 6-14 shooting. She also dished out three assists for the Vikings. Hanna Geistfeld chipped in 11 points for the Vikings.
Junior guard Haley Sandin led all Viking scorers tonight with 15 points and became Bethany's all-time leading scorer since the school became a four-year NCAA institution in 2004. Sandin now has 1,284 points in just three years.
