MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Vikings (10-4) hosted MIAC opponent Carleton College (5-8) in non-conference play on Monday evening. Prior to the start of the game, junior guard Haley Sandin was honored for becoming Bethany's all-time leading scorer, an accomplishment she achieved this past Saturday against Wisconsin-Superior.
Carleton jumped out to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter. The Vikings outscored the Knights in the second quarter, 16-15, and went into halftime down 33-26. The Vikings struggled shooting from the field in the first half going 7-28 (25%), but they dominated at the free throw line going 12-12 to stay in the game. Carleton was 14-37 (37.8%) from the field and 2-4 at the charity stripe.
Hanna Geistfeld was 2-3 from the field and 4-4 at the free throw line to lead all Viking scorers with eight points. Emily Skrien was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line in the first half and Abby Olson scored six points and pulled down five rebounds.
The Vikings came up big in the third quarter, outscoring the Knights 25-8, to take a commanding 51-41 lead. Carleton responded quickly in the fourth quarter, cutting into the Bethany lead and tying the game with 4:29 left. The Vikings hung tough down the stretch, getting stops and making free throws to finish the game with a 63-62 win.
The Vikings had five players reach double figures in a balanced attack. Hanna Geistfeld led the way for the Vikings with 15 points, going 4-6 from the field and 7-8 from the free throw line. Haley Sandin scored 11 points for the Vikings with six rebounds and five assists. Abby Olson and Brooke Henning each nearly had a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds apiece. Emily Skrien scored 10 points off the bench for Bethany.
Up Next: The Vikings travel to St. Bonifacius on Wednesday to play Crown College at 7:30 PM.
