MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran College women's basketball team is now 2-0 after defeating Mayville State University 87-86 in their home-opener. The Vikings were led by the dynamic duo of Abby Olson and Haley Sandin who combined to score 52 points.
The Vikings saw an eight point halftime lead disappear after they were outscored by the Comets 20-12 in the third quarter. Mayville State climbed back into the game as they launched 51 three-point attempts, connecting on 19. The Vikings held their advantage at the free throw line as they went 26-35 compared to just 9-14 for Mayville. In the final period, the Vikings held a 10 point lead with five minutes remaining. The Comets began to chip away at the lead, but the Vikings sealed the game with free throws down the stretch.
Abby Olson scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds. She was also 9-12 from the free throw line. Haley Sandin scored 25 points and dished out six assists. Hanna Geistfeld added 12 points for the Vikings.
In addition to the huge advantage for the Vikings at the free throw line, they also scored 20 points off turnovers compared to just seven for the Comets. The Vikings also got 17 crucial points from their bench.
