Mankato, MN. – The Bethany Lutheran Vikings women's basketball team beat the St. Catherine University Wildcats in an overtime thriller by a score of 72-67. The win makes the fifth in a row for the Vikings, who have yet to pick up a loss this season.
The game started close, with both teams trading buckets and not allowing their opponent to gain any substantial lead. Then, halfway through the first quarter, the Wildcats went on a 10-2 run that put them up 19-10 with three minutes left in the quarter. The second quarter brought another dominate performance for the Wildcats, and they went up 33-26 at the end of the half. The start of the third half saw the Wildcats jump out to a 10 point lead. But then, the Vikings went on a tear and would end the third quarter down by 4. The momentum carried over to the fourth, and the Vikings would get back into the game thanks to an astounding performance from
Abby Olson; she would score 11 points and go 3-5 from three point range. The performance helped the Vikings force overtime by tying the score at 64.
The Vikings would hold the Wildcats to just 3 points in overtime, while they scored 8. The win came down to three key defensive plays; two drawn charges by
Haley Sandin and a block by
Kenlie Pytleski that would turn into a three point play on the other end.
The Vikings would take advantage of the Wildcats 23 turnovers, outscoring the Wildcats in points off of turnovers 28-8. The Vikings would also convert on more of their free throws, hitting 81% opposed to the Wildcat's 69%.
Abby Olson would take charge in the game with 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Haley Sandin would also contribute to the win with 17 points, and
Hanna Geistfeld had 13.
Up next: The Vikings will look to win six in a row on Saturday, November 24th against the St. Mary's University Cardinals in Winona, MN at 1:00 p.m.
