Mankato, MN. – After losing 5 games in a 6 game stretch earlier in the season, the Vikings Men's Basketball team has now evened their record at 5-5 with their second straight win, this one over the Martin Luther College Knights by a score of 77-46.
The beginning of the game did not favor the Vikings, with the Knights going out on a 9-3 run to start. However, the Vikings then began fighting back, and were soon able to take an 18-17 lead about halfway through the first half. The Vikings carried that momentum into the back part of the half, leading by as much as 15, and ending the half with a 40-31 lead.
The Vikings went on a surge in the second half. They would increase their lead to 31 points and they weren't showing any signs of slowing down. They would keep the score close to that 31 lead mark, even ending the game with a 31 point 77-46 victory.
One major factor in the Viking's victory would be their defensive pressure. The Vikings recorded 5 blocks and 11 steals and would take advantage of 17 turnovers by the Knights, outscoring them 22-11 in points off of turnovers. The Vikings also capitalized on 13 offensive rebounds, scoring 12 second chance points.
The Vikings were led by
Cire Mayfield with 19 points and 6 assists. The Vikings also had contributions from
Jared Milinkovich, who had 13 points on 6-7 shooting, and
Trenton Krueger, who tallied 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Up Next: The Vikings hope to continue their win streak against Northland College on Saturday, December 15th at 4:45 P.M. in Ashland, WI.
