Vikings Sweep Yellowjackets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Superior, Wis. - The Bethany baseball team improved their record to 8-8 and improved their conference record to 3-1 after sweeping the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior on Thursday morning. The Vikings won the first contest by a score of 11-9 and the second by a tally of 5-4.

In game one the Vikings capitalized on shaky defense from the Yellowjackets to secure the victory. Bethany also benefited greatly from home runs by both Nick Caldeen and Mylo Hommes. With the Vikings trailing by one in the fourth inning Caldeen's three run shot gave the Vikings a two run lead. The Yellowjackets tied the game in the bottom of the fourth before Hommes hit his two run home run in the sixth to give the lead back to the Vikings. Bethany scratched two more runs across in the eighth to garner enough of a lead to seal the victory. Hommes had two hits, two RBI's, and two runs to lead the Vikings offense while John Brown also had a solid day at the plate with three hits and two runs scored. Alex Babcock got the win in relief, pitching four innings and striking out six.

Bethany did not lead in game two until the top of the ninth inning but managed to beat the Yellowjackets behind solid pitching and defense. Ben Boran and Caldeen led the Vikings at the plate in game two with two hits each with Boran scoring two of the Vikings five runs. Grant Becher and Joe Ziwicki each had a hit for the Vikings with Becher gaining three RBI's and Ziwicki scoring two runs. The key hit for the Vikings came in the top of the ninth when Ross Beumer pinch hit for the Vikings and drove a one-out double to right center to score Boran and tie the game. A Yellowjackets error later in the inning scored Beumer from third to give the Vikings the lead. Babcock came in the last inning and struck out the side to gain the save for the Vikings. Jacob Duden got the win for the Vikings throwing three innings of shutout relief for Bethany.

UP NEXT: The Vikings will play MN-Morris on Sunday, April 22. The games will be played at the University of Northwestern at 4 and 6:30 PM.
