Box Score 2 Mankato, Minn. - The Bethany baseball team got its first action in Mankato all year and came out with a sweep of Martin Luther College. The Vikings won game one by a tally of 9-0 before 10 running the Knights in seven innings in game two by a score of 12-2.
In game one, Bethany jumped out to a hot start by scoring three runs in the first inning. A
John Brown double scored
Grant Becher, who walked to reach base, and two batters later
Ross Beumer hit his second home run in as many games which also scored
Brown to get the Vikings out to a quick start. Two innings later the Vikings added on another run when
Nick Caldeen crushed a solo home run to left center to make the score 4-0. In the fifth inning a few Knight miscues gave Bethany another run as
Walker Linde reached on a walk, was bunted to second, advanced to third on a balk, and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0. The Vikings would cool off for a few innings but tacked on four more runs in top of the ninth inning to take a 9-0 lead and secure the victory. In the contest Bethany mustered only seven hits but
Brown had two of them, to go along with an RBI and a run scored.
Beumer had one hit, reached base on two walks, had two RBIs and two runs scored to help the Vikings offense.
Logan Nissen started the game on the hill for the Vikings and threw six and two-thirds innings, struck out ten, and allowed just three hits.
Hunter Hamers threw the last two and a third innings, allowed no hits, and struck out four.
In game two the Knights took an early lead by scoring a run in the first, but Bethany answered with three runs in the top of the second.
Caldeen,
Diego Martiarena, and
Beumer had three straight hits to start the inning that plated two, and
Jake LaBerge came up and singled to score
Beumer and give them a 3-1 lead. Martin Luther got another run across in the fourth as Bethany's bats went cold but they turned that all around in the fifth inning. The Vikings scored two runs in the fifth, five in the sixth, and two more in the seventh to manage a 12-2, seven inning victory. In game two,
Beumer,
Laberge,
Linde, and
Ben Boran all recorded two hits for the Vikings with
Beumer and
Laberge each recording two RBIs.
Becher had just one hit in the contest but managed four RBIs to lead Bethany's hitters.
Cody Leitner started the game on the mound for the Vikings going six innings, allowing just one earned run, and striking out seven.
Adam Fjerstad came on for one inning of relief, struck out one, and allowed zero runs.
UP NEXT: The Vikings will play at home once again as they host the North Central Rams next Tuesday, May 1st with games starting at 1:30 and 3:30 PM.
