Duluth, MN. – The Vikings women's basketball team beat the College of Saint Scholastica Saints 70-62. The win moves the Vikings record to 14-4, and puts their UMAC record at 8-1. The Vikings are tied for the best record in the UMAC conference.
The game did not start well for the Vikings. The Saints were able to come out of the huddle firing, and quickly took an 8-2 lead. The Vikings would be able to go on 10-2 a run of their own in just over two minutes to take a small 12-10 lead. The Saints started the second quarter with momentum, running up to a nine point lead. The Vikings would be able to shrink it to a quarter-low four point lead, but the Saints would go on another run and end the first half ahead 34-26.
Three minutes into the third, the Vikings would go on a 10-5 run, cutting their deficit to three points at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter would see the Vikings make their successful surge. Within two minutes they had taken the lead and they would hold onto that lead for the rest of the game. The Vikings outscored the Saints 29-18 in the fourth quarter, and left with a 70-62 victory.
The Vikings would be able to put their defensive pressure on the Saints, and that would play a big part in the win. The Vikings forced 17 turnovers and recorded 11 steals. The Vikings would also be able to outpace the Saints, beating them in fast break points 14-8.
Hannah Geitsfield would have a breakout game, nearly recording a double-double with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Haley Sandin and Abby Olson would also contribute some key points, scoring 20 and 12 respectively. Emily Skrien corralled 10 rebounds.
