Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team (6-2 overall, 2-1 UMAC) hung on to win 69-68 against UW-Superior (5-5, 3-1) Saturday evening. This marked the first conference loss for the Yellowjackets.
Junior Abby Olson (Montevideo, Minn.) had the game-winning shot with her spin move and successful layup with 12 seconds left to give the Vikings the 69-68 lead. After a timeout, UW-Superior advanced the ball to half court to attempt one more play. Their jump shot was missed and freshman Skylar Cotton (Grand Meadow, Minn.) corralled the rebound as the buzzer sounded to seal the win.
Olson led all scorers with 25 points. Classmates Hanna Geistfeld (Truman, Minn.) and Kenlie Pytleski (East Chain, Minn.) each had 13 points.
UW-Superior led 44-40 at halftime, but BLC opened the third quarter on a 5-0 run to take the lead. The score remained close and was tied for the last time at 67 all with 23 seconds to play.
The 'Jackets took the one-point lead as they made both free throws. The Vikings then called timeout to advance the ball to mid-court, which resulted in Olson's bucket with 12 seconds left.
Bethany owned two of the three team shooting percentage categories, as the blocks and steals were even between the schools.
The Vikings are off from competition until Saturday, Dec. 28 when they host Saint Benedict at 3 p.m.
