ST. PETER, MN – The Bethany Lutheran College women's tennis team started their spring season this weekend with a pair of matches against Gustavus Adolphus College and Mount Marty College. The Vikings had their hands full against Gustavus, losing 9-0, and then battled with Mount Marty, but came up a little short, falling 6-3.
The singles lineup for the day was Taylor Bolduan, Shoshana Bruner, Leah Schaefer, Audrey Petersen, Jessalyn Aune-Smith, and Emma Carmichael at 1-6 respectively.
Taylor Bolduan and Shoshana Bruner teamed up at #1 doubles and were followed by Leah Schaefer and Audrey Petersen at #2 and Jessalyn Aune-Smith and Emma Carmichael at #3.
Against Gustavus, Bolduan and Bruner both put up a good fight in their singles matches. Bolduan took a total of six games, but lost the match 6-2, 6-4. Bruner won eight games, but lost 6-3, 7-5. The doubles teams had their hands full, only managing to win a combined two games between the three matches.
The Vikings were much more competitive against the Lancers of Mount Marty College. Taylor Bolduan picked up a win for the Vikings in her singles match, winning in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-3. Bruner lost a three-set heartbreaker 6-2, 5-7, 0-1 (7-10). Leah Schaefer gave it a good run at third singles, but came up short 7-5, 6-2. Audrey Petersen picked up a first-set win, but lost the match in a third set tiebreaker. Jessalyn Aune-Smith won a three-set thriller 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). Emma Carmichael gave the Vikings their third win in singles play, winning 6-3, 7-5.
Bolduan/Bruner were tough in doubles, but came up short 9-7. Aune-Smith/Petersen also gave the Lancers a good fight, but lost 8-5.
Up next: The Vikings take on North Central University on Friday, February 15th at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville, MN at 8:30 PM.
