MANKATO, MN – After losing their first game in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament yesterday, the Bethany Lutheran women's softball team rallied for two wins today. The Vikings handled #2 UW-Superior in game one, winning 5-0 and then defeated #3 St. Scholastica 4-2 in their second game of the day.
Shelby Bloemendaal was phenomenal in game one, pitching a complete game shutout while giving up just one hit. The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jenna Reynolds singled to right field to score Zoe Kinakin. Jasmine Bejarano singled to center field to bring home Haylee Sobrero, making the score 2-0. In the fourth inning, Reynolds came up big again when she hit a three-run homer to left field. She finished the game 2-3 with four RBIs as the Vikings captured a 5-0 win, eliminating the Yellowjackets from the tournament.
Bria Majeski took to the pitching circle for the Vikings in game two. The Saints were able to put up one run in the first inning, but Majeski and the Viking defense then held them scoreless through the fifth. Sarah Presler scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to even the score. In the bottom of the fifth, with the game tied 1-1, the Vikings scored three runs to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Haylee Sobrero delivered a double in the inning to score Zoe Kinakin. Sobrero finished the game 2-3 with one RBI. The Saints scored one more run in the top of the sixth, but the Vikings won 4-2, eliminating them from the tournament. Majeski pitched a complete game, giving up four hits and two runs with five strikeouts.
Up Next: The Vikings now play #4 University of Northwestern beginning on Saturday, May 4 at 12 PM. If the Vikings win game one, they will play the Eagles again at 2 PM. BLC needs both wins to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Regional.
