Mayfield Sets Single Season Record in Assists in Loss to Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore Cire Mayfield (St. Louis Park, Minn.) set the single season record in assists Wednesday in Bethany Lutheran (16-6 overall, 11-2 UMAC) 103-82 loss to Northwestern (17-6, 13-1). Mayfield surpassed the previous record of 153 with 6:55 left in the second half as he fed junior Jared Milinkovich (New Prague, Minn.) for the layup. The assist total was previously achieved by Neil Echten in 2017-18 and Tommy Saffert in 2007-08.

Unfortunately, the Vikings' 11-game winning streak came to a halt. This stands as the third-longest winning streak in program history, as the record of 13 consecutive wins occurred in 2011-12.

Milinkovich led the team with 22 points. Three players joined him in double figures as senior Trenton Krueger (Eagan, Minn.) had 18, Mayfield scored 16 and junior Brian Smith (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had 11.

Mayfield finished with a double double with his 16 points and 11 assists.

The Eagles opened the contest on a 20-10 run over the first six minutes and later led 57-42 at halftime. BLC was able to cut the deficit to nine three times in the second half, but was unable to get any closer.

Bethany owned the team advantage in blocks (4-3) as Krueger had two to extend his lead as the career leader in this category.

The Vikings conclude their road trip Saturday against Northland at 3 p.m.
