TUCSON, Ariz.— The Bethany Lutheran softball team (5-9 overall) fell 20-3 to No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan (7-1) in five innings, and was edged 6-5 by Sul Ross State (12-5).
The Titans plated eight in the first, five in the second, and six in the third. The Vikings got on the scoreboard in the fourth as junior Morgan Mashlan (Brandon, SD) drove in sophomore Jas Bejarano (Eld Grove, Calif.) on her single up the middle. The next batter, junior Taylor Kottke (Maple Grove, Minn.) drove in two on her double down the left field line to make it 19-3.
Illinois Wesleyan tallied its final run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.
The Lobos took the early 3-0 lead in the first, but Bethany sliced the margin to one as senior Haylee Sobrero (Paradise, Calif.) scored on sophomore Anna Hoffman's (Watertown, SD) groundout and junior Tara George (Cottonwood, Calif.) crossed the plate on junior Alyssa Kosta's (Redding, Calif.) single to center to make it 3-2.
Sul Ross State recorded another three runs in the second to push the score to 6-2.
The Vikings cut the lead to one again in the bottom of the frame as they scored three runs. Sobrero drove in Mashlan on her single to right, junior Sarah Presler (Brandon, SD) scampered home on a fielding error and Sobero scored on a groundout.
Hoffman hit a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh, but was unfortunately left stranded as the next batter struck out.
George was 2-4 and Hoffman was 2-4 with an RBI.
The Vikings have a day off tomorrow and return to the field Thursday against Dickinson College at 11 a.m. (MST).
