Sabres Sweep Vikings

TUCSON, Ariz.— The Bethany Lutheran baseball team (0-6 overall) dropped both games of the doubleheader with Marian University of Wisconsin (3-4) Wednesday. The Sabres won the first game 15-3, and claimed the finale, 5-1.

In the opener, the Vikings took the early 1-0 lead in the first as freshman Ben Hopper (North Mankato, Minn.) drove in senior Cody Ulfers (Waseca, Minn.) from second in his single down the right field line. BLC doubled its lead in the third when senior Jake LaBerge (Round Rock, Texas) hit a ground rule double to left which plated Ulfers.

Marian got on the scoreboard in the fourth as the leadoff man hit a triple and scored on the next batter's single down the left field line to make it 2-1.

Bethany made it 3-1 in the fourth as junior Ross Beumer (Northfield, Minn.) crossed the plate on classmate Tommy Gannon's (Janesville, Minn.) single up the middle.

The Sabres would teak the lead in the fifth as they scored five runs. They later added two in the sixth and seven in the seventh for the win.

LaBerge finished 2-3 at the plate as both of his hits were doubles. This was the fourth time in his career to have two doubles in a game. Ulfers joined him with multiple hits as he was 2-4 with the two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Marian took the 1-0 lead in the first and pushed it to 3-0 in the third.

The Vikings got on the scoreboard in the fourth as LaBerge slugged a leadoff home run over the left field fence.

The Sabres answered with their final two runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-1.

BLC returns to the field tomorrow for its final varsity games of the trip. The Vikings will first face Carthage at 9 a.m. (MST).
