Vikings Escape Knights in Season Opener

Box Score NORTHFIELD, Minn.— The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team (1-0 overall) was able to get past Carleton (0-1) 66-62 Saturday in the season opener. This marked the fourth-straight win for BLC in the series.

The fourth quarter was back and forth as the Knights took the lead at 56-55 with 4:58 to play. Senior Hanna Geistfeld (Truman, Minn.) got the offensive rebound and the putback with 3:39 left to take the one-point lead (57-55).

Then, the Knights made both free throws, Geistfeld made both of hers, and Carleton answered with a layup as the lead continued to change hands.

Geistfeld scored the next four points as she made another layup and two more free throws to make the score 64-60.

Junior Skylar Cotten (Grand Meadow, Minn.) was fouled and made one free throw to bring it to 65-60. The Knights made both free throws for their last points of the game, which made it a three-point lead (65-63).

A jump ball was called with 0:11 to play and Carleton was fouled and missed both free throws. Sophomore Sara Kottke (Buffalo Lake, Minn.) was fouled with two seconds left and made one of her attempts for the final score of 66-62.

Geistfeld led all players with 29 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Cotten joined her in double figures with 10 points.

As a team, BLC handedly won the battle of the boards (46-29).

Bethany continues its 11-game road trip Wednesday against Augsburg at 7 p.m.
