MANKATO, Minn.— Luther College (2-0 overall) swept Bethany Lutheran (0-4) Sunday to conclude the first weekend of the Bethany Invitational. The Norse won the opener 8-0 in five innings, and used a two-run walkoff homerun to claim the finale, 9-1 in six innings.
Luther scored one in the second and had a two-run double in the third to take the 3-0 lead. A five-run fifth made it 8-0. Sophomore Liz Milam (Le Sueur, Minn.) slugged a two-out double to centerfield in the bottom of the frame, but was unfortunately left stranded, as the next batter struck out to end a rally.
In the second game, BLC took the 1-0 lead in the first, as junior Zoe Kinakin (Victoria, British Columbia) drove in freshman Jenna Wahl (Holman, Wis.) on her single to left.
The Norse claimed the 3-1 lead in the third and added four in the fourth to make it 7-1. This would remain the score until the bottom of the sixth, as a two-run homerun over the left field fence sealed the victory and the sweep.
Bethany returns to the field Saturday for a doubleheader against UW-River Falls in the final weekend of its own Invitational. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
