St. Peter, Minn.— Gustavus (6-1 overall) took both games of the doubleheader Sunday against Bethany Lutheran (1-8). The Gusties won the opener 3-0, and claimed the finale on a walkoff single in the eighth inning.
In the first game, Gustavus scored all three runs in the second inning, which included a two-run double down the right field line.
The Viking were positioned to score in the fourth inning, but the runner was picked off at third to quell the threat. The leadoff man got aboard in the seventh, but the next batters were retired in order to give the first game to the home team.
Junior Adam Fjerstad (Hayfield, Minn.) threw five complete innings and struck out as many. Sophomore Brent Fowler (Berthoud, Colo.) went 2-3.
In the finale, Bethany took the 3-0 lead in the third on an RBI double from junior Carter Wendlandt (Minneapolis, Minn.) and a two-run double by senior Jake LaBerge (Round Rock, Texas).
The Gusties evened the score in the fourth with three runs of their own.
The game remained tied through the seventh as BLC was retired in order, and Gustavus stranded runners on first and second to send it into extra innings.
In the eighth, junior Ross Beumer (Northfield, Minn.) drew a leadoff walk, but was unfortunately left stranded as the next three batters were sent down in order.
The Gusties had runners on second and third and won on a walkoff single through the right side.
Beumer finished 1-2, and LaBerge and Wendlandt each went 1-4.
The Vikings return to the field Saturday, April 10 when they host Concordia College (MN) and Central in a triangular.
